What Is a POI Dataset? Places, Fields & Uses

Published by DevIntel · Content reviewed 2026-10-22. Dataset snapshot dates are stated separately.

A points-of-interest (POI) dataset describes places such as shops, cafés, clinics and offices using names, categories, coordinates and available addresses. A place is not necessarily a registered company, a unique building or a verified currently open business.

What can you do with POI data?

Plot candidate locations, compare available geographic coverage, inspect business categories and build territory-planning inputs. These tasks require checks for missing fields and source-specific category differences.

What does this product not include?

It does not include foot traffic, company revenue, business contacts or a legal registration register. A building polygon is contextual geometry rather than an occupancy certificate.

CSV, WKT and WGS84

CSV means comma-separated values. WKT means Well-Known Text, a text representation of geometry. WGS84 (EPSG:4326) is the geographic coordinate reference system used here: longitude and latitude are degrees.

Start with the field dictionary, then compare the region's fill rates and sample against your requirements.
